DIY – Bathtub Faucet Repair

I’ll be showing you guys how to repair a leaky faucet you know this is the tub/shower combo you pull up on the knob and that activates your shower so you just have your knobs are just the hot and the cold first thing that you need to do is make sure that your water heater is on and that you have hot water to the faucet the reason that’s important is because you need to feel the water that’s coming out and whether it’s cold or warm will tell you which side is going to need to be repaired because often it’s only leaking on one side or the other not both this water is cold I ran the hot water first to make sure that I have hot water up to the faucet mmm I shut it off let it cool down for a few minutes and the water that’s leaking out is definitely the cold side so the first thing I need to do is shut off all water supply to this hot side and cold side make sure that the water is completely shut off and open the valves drain the water and then we’ll be able to take this apart and repair it so I’m at my water heater what I’m gonna do is shut off this is my hot side and this is my cold side okay so I’m going to shut those off now the water is turned off coming into the hot water heater and also going out so that’ll shut down my hot side here’s my water meter and I’ll need to open up and turn off the water with the cap off and the lid off ready there’s your shut-off so I put my water key on it and you’re gonna give it a quarter-turn essentially you’re gonna line it up are you gonna right now it’s in line with the water line you’re going to turn it this way so that it’s across the water line and that’ll be showing off now the water line shut off I can go inside and drain the water and get back to repairing that faucet now that the water is turned off outside and my hot water is turned off no longer have water flow still have the drip from the residual that’s in there but here the tools you’re gonna need to repair the faucet Philips a flat and a pair of channellocks so go take your flat screwdriver find the access point on the knob there’d be a little indention where you can get underneath the cap okay like so and ernie thit and then you just pop that out this knob is very loose which i’ll take care of when i put back on this screw needs to be tightened up that’s why it’s so loose the abs it was loose if I didn’t already mention you want to have this knob turned all the way on or all the way open because that that gets the knob turned all the way to the left so when you’re trying to unscrew your your Philips screw it will allow you to do that okay so pull the knob right off things are always nasty and that’s the next thing you need to do is unscrew this stem that comes out I’ll take channel locks and there we go just need to get it started in there it’s not in there super hard just blow bit a little bit more than he ties it so and this this piece is just a trim piece but it can come off with it that’s fine so that’s what you’re doing you’re unscrewing that like I said the trim piece can stay on it that’s not a big deal okay now there’s your extension all that is is the extension on this on the stem so now that extension is out of there I’m gonna take this just with a little little bit pull it out before I get that completely out of the way notice the orientation okay it’s got the

piece over here on the side it’s gonna be on the left side so you want to put it back in the same way because you can actually flip that over and have that on the wrong side this will have a an o-ring on it and all that does is seal it inside the tube so those don’t normally need to be replaced unless they’re unless they’re broken this one’s not and a note on that that’s not a typical over ring it’s very flat so you can’t just go get one of those little o-ring kits and replace that so don’t want to do that unless you have to and then get in here where you can actually see that so the seal is sitting back in the hole this little seal is actually called a seat I don’t know if I mentioned that before but it’s actually called a seat and I have my my seat or seal wait for that to focus there we go I’ve got it in place on the screwdriver I’ve got my spring in place so what I’m gonna do is I’ll put this in there in the hole where plunks and then I’ll take a flathead screwdriver and just push it off the off of the Phillips right into the hole so that I can see it in there properly it’s almost impossible to try to reach in there and put that in place there’s just not enough room and so this is the way that I’ve found that works the best you just slide it off in there like so all right this is the repair kit that you’ll need to replace those seats it’s going to have the two little rubber seats or seals and two different types of springs and you’ll just need to use the type of spring that came out of it which will be the shorter Springs the springs in behind it and you can see it a little bit of water that’s dripping out of that that’s nice normal there’s nothing right now keeping the water from dripping out so I’m go ahead and slide the valve in and again remember your orientation okay push that in nice and tight you notice that the water stopped running so now we’ll just assemble it the way we disassembled it so get my extension back on here okay oh no they’re opening closed okay then are just me down here I wasn’t on that very good so this is back in place now I’m gonna put my my sleeve back on very carefully get there yeah thread started you be able to you’ll be able to tell it’s in the right spot cuz it’ll go nice and smooth and then this chrome ring trim piece just pushes back up against there okay I get my channel locks okay like I said before you just want a little bit more than hand tight you don’t want that thing torqued torque down hard so okay there we go find out here pretty quick if this was all it needed it or not okay velkan screw back in and you remember when we took this off that and the screw was loose which was letting the knob just kind of flop around okay get that tight again over taut over tighten it you know all those pieces in there are plastic so okay but that’s on there a lot better now then with that closed I’m gonna put the cold indicator back on there okay like so we’re back together so let’s go turn the water on now I’m gonna close these okay close those but turn the water on see what we’ve got I did go ahead and replace the seat in

the spring in the hot side also and I do highly recommend doing that I mean you’re already here you’re already you already have all the tools out you know and it only takes a few minutes so I do recommend just going ahead and doing that and I did that I went out and turn my water back on at the meter and put the lid back on that and came inside turned my hot and cold blinds back on turned on all the faucets in the house and blood the air out and here we go no more leaks so that’s what you need to do if you have a leaking faucet in your bathtub thanks for watching guys
